Like Joan Baez, with whom she toured early in her career, Dar Williams is so much more than a folksinger. She both writes and covers a gamut of material, from the intimate "You Rise and Meet the Day" and "So Close to My Heart" to anthems like "Teen for God," "Empire," and "Beautiful Enemy," to Neil Young's "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" and Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" (on which she's joined by Ani DiFranco). "Catchy melodies that unfold into lush harmonies and big vocal climaxes. On Jules Shear's 'Echoes,' she sings, 'every time you love just a little . . . it echoes all over the world.' The sentiment is simple, but the effect is intoxicating, thanks to Williams's lovely, open soprano and the jangly arrangement framed by Rodney Crowell's ex-guitarist Steuart Smith…. Soulive provides the bluesy background for a Bonnie Raitt-like vocal on Williams's own 'Two Sides of the River.' 'I'll Miss You Till I Meet You' is a looking-for-Mr. Right song that might have been sung by the Shangri-Las, but Williams sounds as if she could been a Shangri-La herself."—Washington Post "Among the most moving of Dar's personal songs are 'Blue Light of the Flame,' inspired by the premature death last year of singer-songwriter Rachel Bissex from breast cancer, 'Close to My Heart,' a farewell to a friend (circumstances unsaid) gone from her life, and 'The Hudson,' an ode to the river and also to the great metropolis she reaches before emptying into the ocean."—Sing Out "The best album of her career."—All Music Guide
