Its seven additional nominations included, for the only time in Oscar history, Best Actor nominations for the film's three leads: Charles Laughton, in a career-defining performance, as the cruel and autocratic Captain Bligh; Clark Gable as the strong, noble First Mate Fletcher Christian, whose will to obey erodes under Bligh's tyranny; and Franchot Tone as the idealistic midshipman Byam, torn by his allegiance to both.
