|
|
The second film in Oliver Stone's Vietnam trilogy, based on combat veteran Ron Kovic's memoir, received eight Academy Award nominations in 1990, including Best Picture, and won two (for film editing and for Stone's direction). Tom Cruise delivers an Oscar-nominated performance as Kovic, a zealous, patriotic teen who eagerly volunteers for the Vietnam War but returns as an embittered veteran paralyzed from the mid-chest down. Returning to a political and social environment vastly different from the one he left, he struggles to adjust to his disability before emerging as a brave new voice for the disenchanted at the 1976 Democratic National Convention.
