During the silent era, Lois Weber (1881–1939) was the leading female filmmaker, writer, and producer in Hollywood, and one of the highest paid directors of either sex. The Blot (1921) was the most popular of the more than 100 films she directed, and introduced Claire Windsor and Louis Calhern, who rose to stardom in the 1920s. Windsor plays Amelia Griggs, the beautiful daughter of Professor Andrew Theodore Griggs, whose family lives in genteel poverty. While working in the college library, Amelia attracts the attentions of wealthy Phil West (Calhern), one of her father's laziest students, who secretly plots to improve the Griggs' financial standing while pursuing Amelia's affections.
