|
Adapted by Richard Russo from his Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, Empire Falls (2005) is a portrait of everyday life in a blue-collar town in Maine. The miniseries was nominated for several Emmys and Golden Globes and won an Emmy for Paul Newman. Ed Harris stars as Miles Roby, manager of the Empire Grill, who tries to keep his diner going despite interference from the owner, Mrs. Whiting (Joanne Woodward) and troubling memories of his mother (Robin Wright Penn) and her suitor (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Other characters in Miles' life are his ex-wife (Helen Hunt) and her bodybuilding boyfriend (Dennis Farina); his daughter (Danielle Panabaker); his reformed pothead brother (Aidan Quinn); and his ne'er-do-well father (Newman, in his last role).
