Along with their gig in the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-1950s, John Coltrane and Red Garland made a series of studio dates for Prestige in 1957 and 1958. On this one they work out on three numbers: "Black Pearls," a speedy version of "Lover Come Back to Me," and the equally propulsive blues jam "Sweet Sapphire Blues." The latter begins with Garland soloing in a long, upbeat exploration before Trane unfurls his "sheets of sound." Trumpeter Donald Byrd gets into rapid-fire mode as well, tossing off evenly cadenced lines; then bassist and drummer both solo before Garland ends the tune with a riff credited to Prestige's then-president, Bob Weinstock.
