Description
Recognizing that folk takes and beliefs are as important a part of cultural history as novels or organized religion, this book examines the lives and the supernatural beliefs of the country people of Scotland in the late 18th century, the time of Robert Burns, through several of his most popular poems. It ends with a detailed discussion of "Tam o' Shanter," the bawdy poem of a drunken man's late-night encounter with a band of witches dancing around a devil's pyre, one of whose short shirt—a Cutty-sark—suddenly reveals so much of her that the besotted Tam cries out in excitement, precipitating a fierce chase. Burns himself did not believe that a cloven-hoofed devil appeared in Ayrshire, but he understood that other people did think that Satan walked the earth and witches were real, and that these were genuine beliefs which stemmed from the need to understand the inconsistent world.
