While Allen Ginsberg (James Franco) talks about his life and art, his most celebrated poem, "Howl," is illustrated in animation and the obscenity trial it gave rise to is dramatized. The three threads come together in an unusually structured film that re-creates the spiritual birth of 20th-century counterculture. Ginsberg's descriptions of road trips, love affairs, and his search for personal liberation are intercut with prosecutor Ralph McIntosh's (David Strathairn) attempts to have the printed version of the poem banned as defense attorney Jake Ehrlich (Jon Hamm) fervently argues for freedom of speech and creative expression. The 2011 film was nominated for the Jury Prize at Sundance and a Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
