Mozart's Quintet in E-flat, K. 452, and Beethoven's Quintet in E-flat, Op. 16, are performed on period instruments by America's first wind quintet to do so. One of the tests of great wind writing is whether the composer can make the listener forget the absence of other instruments. That is certainly the case here, and the unique tang of the single wind scoring used by both composers benefits from the use of period instruments: oboe, bassoon, clarinet, and horn, juxtaposed with the fortepiano.
