Like his other famous works in C Minor, Beethoven's Trio in C Minor, Op. 9, No. 3, emphasizes drama and sudden contrasts, albeit on a smaller scale. Occurring throughout the work is the dynamic marking sforzando: a sudden loud accent that turns the music in a different direction or introduces a new idea. Paired on this CD is a second trio work, a noble and warm-hearted divertimento in six movements composed by Mozart the same summer as his final three symphonies. The Trio da Salo was founded at a festival by violinist Ani Kavafian, violinist Barbara Westphal, and cellist Gustave Rivinius and has since been met with great enthusiasm by the press. "A master Trio, technically perfect, with the warmest sound, brilliant, elegant, and energetic—three virtuosi, melting together in a transparent ensemble on the highest level."—Süddeutsche Zeitung, Munich
