This recording came about through a long friendship between jazz pianist Tony Gould and classical composer and jazz pianist David Ward-Steinman. "In Memoriam" features a four-hand version of jazz pianist/composer John Lewis's piece of the same name (which he previously recorded with the Modern Jazz Quartet). Also included is the Suite for two pianos by Martial Solal and several shorter works: "Prologue" and "Epilogue" by Gould, "Skating in Central Park" and "Milano" by Lewis, "Skyline" and "Under Capricorn" by Ward-Steinman, and the standard "Poinciana" by Buddy Bernier and Nat Simon. Besides the written-out sections of the Solal and Lewis pieces, all of the playing is spontaneously improvised, and the results are magical.
