Hailed for performing "brilliantly with clarity, nuance and natural musicality" (Times Argus), Japanese-American pianist Ohuchi made her orchestral debut at age ten with the Wilmington Symphony playing Beethoven's First Piano Concerto. In 2011, Ohuchi performed the world premiere of Kenji Bunch's Piano Concerto with the Colorado Symphony. It conductor, Jeffrey Kahaneas, described her as "a pianist of the first rank … who possesses a ravishing palette of color and who dispatches the most difficult passages with effortless grace." Monica's Notebook is a set of 12 performance etudes written especially for her by her frequent duo partner Bunch, an acclaimed composer and violist. Each etude examines a particular facet of contemporary piano technique (including stylistic inflections from jazz, blues, and rock), while paying homage to the rich tradition of performance etudes in the classical canon.
