French composer Darius Milhaud spent the latter part of the first world war in Rio, soaking up the Brazilian music he heard there. His sojourns are wonderfully remembered in the various movements of Saudades do Brazil, Op. 67, which evoke the moods of different parts of the city. Performed with equal charm and flair by these musicians are his Aspen Serenade, Op. 361, Cantate de la Guerre, and Violin and Harpsichord Sonata. "Milhaud’s cantatas of war and peace … [were] written in 1940 and 1937, respectively. Based on poems by Paul Claudel, who led the composer to Brazilian dance music, both feature solo female voices…. No orchestra is used in these works; both the rhythms and harmonies of contrasting male and female choirs provide their own countermelodies and sound textures."—Fanfare
