Paul Hindemith will perhaps be the most well-known composer in this program, with his 1919 Sonata in F Major, Op. 11, No. 4, for viola, an instrument he played "supremely well … with an almost overwhelming competence," according to Gramophone. "The sheer mastery with which he was able to go about making one instrument express the creativity of his extraordinarily fertile mind is quite breathtaking," they observe. Also for viola is Robert Suderburg's expressive and virtuosic Solo Music II: "Ritual Cycle of Lyrics and Dance," written in 1989 and reminiscent of Bartók. "Charles Martin Loeffler's marvelous settings of Baudelaire and Verlaine for soprano, viola, and piano were written in the 1890s. They are performed beautifully by Suderburg, whose pitch and thoughtful phrasing have not suffered since last I heard her. Robert Suderburg's pieces are extended solo works, the first for violin, the second for viola."—American Record Guide
