These chamber cantatas are thought to come from late in Vivaldi's life, perhaps from the early 1730s. Each is in the form of two da capo arias, separated and sometimes preceded by a recitative. Their pastoral texts (which are provided in the booklet) dwell on the torments of inconstant, absent, or unattainable love in images of storms, bright dawns, and shipwrecks. Vivaldi wrote 37 of them, all for soprano or countertenor and predominantly with harpsichord/cello continuo. They are performed here fervently by male soprano Randall Wong, who was a member of Chanticleer from 1981–92. "RV 678, the only cantata with an obbligato flute, has an aria that reminds one of those operatic flute/soprano duets to come in the following century, but the soprano here is sad rather than mad."—Fanfare "A significant feature of his writing for this courtly genre was Vivaldi's ability to convey words and emotion in the music."—Birmingham Post
