"The Octet must be played by all instruments in symphonic orchestral style," wrote a 16-year-old Mendelssohn on the score to his 1825 work for strings. "Pianos and fortes must be strictly observed and more strongly emphasized than is usual in pieces of this character." A birthday gift for his violinist friend, Eduard Rietz, the piece became one of the composer's favorites as well as a hit with posterity. Named for a place where Tchaikovsky spent some of the happiest moments of his life, Souvenir de Florence remains passionately Russian, with hints of Italy in the gorgeous, bel canto–esque melodies in the second movement. Both are played with flair and nuance by Concertante Chamber Players, frequent guests at the Library of Congress's Coolidge Auditorium.
