Description
"Of the many remarkable qualities Alfredo Kraus brings to the recital and opera stage, one that consistently occasions comment is the youthful power, flexibility and clarity of his sound," wrote the New York Times in 1990. The Spanish tenor was in typically fine voice for this 1984 recital, in which his vocal artistry is always masterfully attuned to the emotional content of the arias from Werther ("Pourquoi me réveiller?"), Manon ("Je suis seul… Ah! Fuyez, douce image") Roméo et Juliette ("L’amour, l’amour…. Ah! lève-toi, soleil!"), Rigoletto ("La donna è mobile"), La Traviata ("Lunge da lei…. De’ miei bollenti spiriti"), and more. Several Spanish songs are also a treasurable portion of the program, which takes place in Madrid's Teatro Real.

"Without doubt Alfredo Kraus was one of the greatest lyric tenors of all time, bringing a seamless quality to every role, his technique always at the service of the music and always within the style of the composer…. This ability to bring characters to life, even in a programme of arias, made his recitals such memorable and stimulating occasions."—Musical Opinion
