Description
In this live 1983 recital from the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Spanish superstar sings opera, zarzuela, and song rarities by an array of European composers. Highlights include Vivaldi's "Se fulgida per te" from Juditha Triumphans, Giordani's "Caro mio ben," Galuppi's "Ingrato, lo veggio" from Adriano in Siria, Gluck's "Ah, sì, la libertè" from Armida, Salieri's "Ou sui-je?" from Les Danaïdes, Bellini's "Sorgi, o padre" from Bianca e Fernando, Pacini's "Tacete … ohimè, quei cantici" from Temistocle, Ravel's Three Hebraic Songs and "Adieux de l’hôtesse arabe," Bizet's "Sérenade," Chapi's "Romanza" from El Barquillero, Serrano's "Canción veneciana" from El Carro del Sol, and Barbieri's "Canción de la Paloma" from El barberillo de Lavapiés.

"Her singing is not noted for dramatic intensity, à la Callas, nor for the spectacular tone and agility of Sutherland; instead, Caballé simply displays a refinement of style and flawless technique, both in opera and in recitals. Lavish testimonials to her singing are given by other singers, notably sopranos Sutherland and Cheryl Studer and tenors Plácido Domingo (who finds her 'one of the most important singers of all time') and José Carreras ('One of the most unbelievable sounds I ever heard in an opera house'). All of them are wild about her breath control. Studer loves 'her incredible pianissimi.'"—Washington Post

"Mme Caballé's singing is in another category, as regards purity of tone and finish of phrase, from that of any contemporary soprano known to me in the same field. The limpid quality of her softer tones is especially lovely…. There are several instances of those softly floating ascents above the stave which recall the youthful Zinka Milanov."—Gramophone
