Die-cut pages show partial pictures; a boy sits in a chair in the middle of an otherwise blank page, for example, with the text "one boy." When the page is turned, the scene is revealed differently: the boy is shown in a room full of empty chairs, while the hole in the page lets the "one" read as part of "all alone." The changes continue, all the way up to "ten ants ..." (turn the page) "in your pants," and on the last page we see that each of the previous illustrations are in fact paintings the boy himself has made.
