Based on the memoirs The Motorcycle Diaries by Ernesto "Che" Guevara and Traveling with Che Guevara by Alberto Granado, this international production follows the 1952 pilgrimage of Guevara and Granado from Argentina through Chile, Peru, and Columbia, most of it on a leaky 1939 Norton motorcycle. Walter Salles's film, in Spanish with English subtitles, shows how the two friends—Guevara a medical student, Granado a biochemist—were deeply impressed by the disparities they witnessed between the rich and the poor, the privileged and the afflicted, and volunteered to serve in a leper colony. Shot on locations all over South America, this 2004 film earned numerous awards at festivals from Sundance to Cannes.
