Nominated for ten Academy Awards and winning the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor (Joseph Schildkraut), this 1937 biography and courtroom drama stars Paul Muni as Émile Zola, the French novelist who was famously friends with Paul Cézanne and a defender of disgraced army captain Alfred Dreyfus. Zola publishes a letter accusing the French military of a cover-up at the highest levels, forcing his own libel trial and also focusing public attention on the unfortunate Dreyfus (played by Schildkraut), sent to a prison island on manufactured charges. This special edition—full screen, as it was originally presented—includes the dramatic short The Littlest Diplomat; the musical short Romance Road; and a cartoon Ain't We Got Fun, as well as an audio recording of Muni starring in the Lux Radio Theater adaptation of the film.
