(2013 Grammy Winner for Best American Album) Like French cognac or a vintage guitar, Bonnie Raitt's voice—as well as her overall artistry—just keeps getting better and better with age. How many others are on Rolling Stone's lists of Top 100 greatest guitarists and 100 greatest singers? Raitt's reggae-inspired reinvention of Gerry Rafferty's hit "Right Down the Line" was this long-awaited album's first single ("just the right note of rueful worldly wisdom—and on her guitar solo, she shreds," wrote Rolling Stone). The set also includes two Bob Dylan covers (bluesy takes on "Million Miles" and "Standing in the Doorway"), Loudon Wainwright III's "You Can't Fail Me Now," and a funky version of Randall Bramblett's "Used to Rule the World." "To me, that song is about the Occupy movement," Raitt says of the latter. "It's about the kind of hubris America has had, as if there are no consequences." The presence of the great guitarist Bill Frisell also adds to the patina of the album, which is another addition to Raitt's starry crown as grande dame of roots rock.
