Absolute technical mastery and keen musical perceptions are a must to unlock the riches of the Diabelli Variations (modeled on Bach's Goldberg Variations), and that's what we find in these historic 1950s recordings. Gramophone praises the "affection and insight" Joseph Szigeti brings to Mozart's Sonata No. 32, one of his mature masterpieces, and indeed, the two instruments seem to sing in harmonies of incandescent beauty in both the opening Largo and the melodically intense Andante.
