Sung in Italian, this mid-1950s live recording of Humperdinck's enrapturing children's opera features Sena Jurinac as Hansel and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf as Gretel (a part she recapitulated in the classic recording from the same time period). The Philharmonia Orchestra are spot on, and Herbert von Karajan handles the score's allusions to Wagner with aplomb—as he does the musical vagaries of Berlioz's romantic outpourings. Included are extensive liner notes but no libretto. "What we have, as always when Karajan is at the helm, is an orchestral instrument of matchless beauty, a Stradivarius among orchestras."—Gramophone
