German composer Julius Weismann (1879–1950) endeavored to "blend the transparent textures and rhythmic clarity of early 20th-century neoclassicism … with Bartókian harmonies" (Fanfare); this mix of works includes a theme and variations for viola and piano, a set of piano etudes, and a Phantastischer Reigen for string quartet. (He wrote 12 string quartets.) The latter piece was inspired by a poem describing young people who had lost their loved ones to war and pestilence experiencing the reawakening of hope by dancing with new partners on the eve of May Day. It was taken up by many famous quartets of the early teens, and one contemporary critic called it one of Weismann's "most felicitous and delightful inspirations."
