These musical settings of poet Heinrich Heine's Die Heimkehr by the undeservedly obscure Johann Hoven are reminiscent of Schubert, Schuman, and Wolf but are more adventurous harmonically, with expressive piano parts and occasional use of unusual time signatures. Hoven, who had a dual career as a lawyer and a composer, was judged by one German encyclopedia to be "the most important composer of lieder between Schubert and Brahms."
