|
J. Lee Thompson directs this lavish, sprawling 1969 variation on the Erich von Stroheim classic Greed, featuring an atmospheric Grammy-nominated musical score by Quincy Jones. Gregory Peck stars as the title character, a taciturn lawman who is shanghaied into searching for the gold-filled canyon of an elusive Apache legend. In short order, he becomes the target of virtually every fortune hunter in the West, whose numbers include Omar Sharif, Telly Savalas, Eli Wallach, Raymond Massey, Edward G. Robinson, Keenan Wynn, Lee J. Cobb, Burgess Meredith, and Anthony Quayle, as well as Julie Newmar playing a hot-blooded Apache temptress, whose underwater nude scenes were celebrated in Playboy.
