Almost invariably set in a lush garden, the bungalow allowed homeowners to get "back to nature" in the early 20th century without leaving the confines of their own property. As an extension of the adjoining living room, the front porch offered a comfortable spot from which to enjoy unimpeded views of the surrounding landscape and also defined the home's street presence—what today would be called "curb appeal." This book examines both the social history and the design characteristics of bungalow porches, which came to be one of their most distinctive design features. It is one of the compact surveys in the Bungalow Basics series by restoration consultant Paul Duchscherer, spotlighting a particular aspect of these pleasantly cozy, well designed, and affordable homes from the early 20th century. It features some 50 color photos of restored and well-preserved examples.
