Making good on the scheme he proposed in an on-air tête-à-tête with Maurice Sendak, arch pundit and television personality Stephen Colbert has indeed penned and illustrated a picture book, hoping to "cash in" on the current celebrity children's book craze. In deliberately vapid rhymes and simplistic cartoons—perhaps funnier to adult fans than to actual children—it tells the story of a pole who doesn't know what kind of pole to be. And although Sendak was frank about Colbert's effort to break into children's books ("You've started already by being an idiot"), even he admitted, "The sad thing is I like it."
