Description
On October 4, 1970, the first female superstar of rock wound up a recording session with her dynamite new touring group, the Full Tilt Boogie Band. Afterwards, she went to a bar and then to her LA hotel, where she overdosed on heroin. It had only been three years since her meteoric rise began, with her showstopping performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. When putting together material for a 40th anniversary edition of Joplin's posthumous No. 1 album, Pearl, researchers discovered a cache of alternate versions and outtakes. Besides the original master mono mixes of the singles ("Cry, Baby," "Me and Bobby McGee," "Half Moon," "Get It While You Can," "Move Over," "A Woman Left Lonely"), this augmented set includes studio banter, a live version of "Tell Mama" from Toronto in 1970, her off-the-cuff classic "Mercedes Benz," and many alternate versions and takes of the ten cherished songs from the original LP. The new material pinpoints both the tough and vulnerable aspects of Joplin's personality, while revealing her lightning sense of humor and her razor-sharp attention to the nuances of her craft. Yet another bonus is Janis's scorching live version of "Half Moon," recorded for her appearance on The Dick Cavett Show on August 3, 1970.
