An R. Crumb color drawing of Joe and Cleoma Falcon, who sing the title song, graces the cover of this collection of folk rarities. These redoubtable performers may be miles apart in traditions and location (Louisiana bayous, the mountains of Ukraine and Poland, and the American rural countryside), but they all share a preoccupation with the joys and miseries wrought by Cupid's arrow. Songs in English include the Carter Family's "I Never Will Marry," Dock Boggs' "False Hearted Lover's Blues," Emry Arthur's "She Lied to Me," the Stoneman Family's "Too Late," and Richard "Rabbit" Brown's "Never Let the Same Bee Sting You Twice." Love spurned, romance gone wrong, and jealousy also preoccupy the Cajun singers ("L'abandonné," "Assis dans les fenêtres de ma chambre," and "Quelqu'un est jaloux"), and the European numbers are studded with infectious wedding hoedowns galore, as well as a few cautionary tales. Both the narrative and instrumental songs are superbly annotated in the liner notes.
