|
The first of three great musicals co-directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, On the Town is based on the Broadway hit and set to an Academy Award–winning score adapted from Leonard Bernstein's music for the Jerome Robbins ballet Fancy Free. Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munshin play sailors on 24-hour leave in the Big Apple in this 1949 musical. Gabey (Kelly) falls for a Coney Island dancer (Vera-Ellen) he believes to be a debutante, Chip (Sinatra) is kidnapped by a cab driver (Betty Garrett), and Ozzie (Munshin) attracts the attention of an anthropologist (Ann Miller) who finds him to be a perfect example of prehistoric man.
