The ravishing strains of the exquisite, nobly unfolding "Air" from Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 hooked us at once on Meyers' playing. Then came the A Minor and E Major concerti for violin plus the Concerto for Two Violins, Strings, and Continuo in D Minor (aka "the Double Concerto"), and we were seriously smitten. There's a novel twist as well: Meyers plays both solo parts herself on her two Stradivarius instruments—the first on the 1697 "Molitor" (thought to have been owned by Napoleon) and the second on the 1730 "Royal Spanish" (once owned by the king of Spain). Meyers' mother played music—such as the Beethoven Violin Concerto—constantly for her daughter both in utero and afterwards. "Especially when she fed me," Meyers says, "so I would associate the pleasure of food and eating with music." The former child prodigy's mother was also responsible for the white knee socks worn in Meyers' appearance on Johnny Carson at the tender age of 11, which is viewable on YouTube.
