Martin Scorsese called 1940s indie auteur Edgar Ulmer "an inspiration to low-budget filmmakers." Dubbed the "Poet of Poverty Row," this former set designer updates Hamlet as a contemporary thriller in Strange Illusion. In Ulmer's 1945 version, young college student Paul Cartwright (James Lydon) dreams that the accidental death of his father may have been quite intentional, and that his mother's (Sally Eilers) new boyfriend (Warren William) may have had a hand in it. Soon Paul begins receiving letters from his deceased father (delivered by the executor of his will) that seem to confirm Paul's worst suspicions.
