Producer Merian Cooper, director Ernest Schoedsack, special effects supervisor Willis O'Brien, and leading man Robert Armstrong made three giant ape films between 1933 and 1949 (King Kong, Son of Kong, Mighty Joe Young), and despite numerous remakes, the originals have lost none of their timeless appeal. Handsomely packaged in a mock film case, this four-disc, special collector's edition contains all three movies, plus commentary by legendary visual effects supervisor Ray Harryhausen (who won an Oscar assisting O'Brien on Mighty Joe Young), a recreation of the lost "Spider Pit" sequence by Peter Jackson, an hour-long profile of Cooper, a 2½-hour documentary on the making of the first Kong, and an assortment of poster reprints and other memorabilia.
