All six films in this collection were made after Stewart turned 40 and had successfully transitioned from his youthful idealistic roles (Mr. Smith, Destry, George Bailey) to the intense loners he played in the 1950s. The 1949 baseball-comeback flick The Stratton Story won an Oscar for Douglass Morrow's empathetic screenplay. Anthony Mann's taut direction and another Oscar-nominated script helped make Naked Spur (1953) one of Stewart's best westerns. He delivers two of his most inspiring performances in 1957's The Spirit of St. Louis (an Oscar nominee for special effects) and The FBI Story (1959). Firecreek (1968) and The Cheyenne Social Club (1970) pair an aging Stewart with pal Henry Fonda.
