Hilary Swank stars as the conniving, vengeful courtier Jeanne de la Motte-Valois in this lavish fact-based costume epic from 2001. Stripped of her title and orphaned at a young age, Jeanne takes up with a gigolo (Simon Baker) at the court of Louis XVI and plots an elaborate revenge to regain her title and wealth. Aided by the salacious Cardinal Rohan (Jonathan Pryce) and her avaricious husband of convenience (Adrien Brody), Jeanne implicates Marie Antoinette in the affair of the titular 2800-carat necklace, helping to topple the monarchy. The costumes are as spectacular as the necklace and earned the film an Oscar nomination.
