Filmed in the Republic of Chad, Abouna ("Our Father") is the 2002 story of two brothers, eight-year-old Amine and 15-year-old Tahir, who awake one day to find that their father has disappeared. Later, while watching a movie at a local theater, they believe they see their father on the screen. They attempt to steal a reel of the film but are apprehended by police and sent to an Islamic school in a distant village, where they continue their search for their father. Acclaimed filmmaker Mahamat-Saleh Haroun tells this uniquely African story of abandonment with a minimum of dialogue and often stunning visual tableaux. In Arabic and French with English subtitles.
