It is January 1801, in this 15th adventure starring Alan Lewrie of the Royal Navy. Known as "St. Alan the Liberator" for freeing—or rather, stealing—a dozen black slaves on Jamaica to man his frigate years before, the captain is at last being brought to trial for it. At the same time, Russia, Sweden, Denmark, and Prussia are forming a League of Armed Neutrality, to Napoleon Bonaparte's delight, to deny Great Britain her vital exports. The captain is acquitted but put ashore in disgrace, until a brawl in a Panton Street brothel and a drunk, infatuated young Russian count impel Lewrie's return to sea commanding the frigate Thermopylae to face down the League in the north.
