The bluegrass gospel tradition is heard at its most heartfelt, authentic, and spiritually gripping in this 1988 release, which includes renditions of such staples as "Let the Church Roll On," "In His Arms I'm Not Afraid" (highlighted by Stanley's tenor singing), and the quartet number "Calling My Children Home." The centerpiece, though, is Stanley's solo vocal on the modal tune "Daddy's Rose"—similar in its otherworldly effect to his masterpiece "Oh, Death." "Stanley began his professional career in 1946, when he and his brother Carter appeared on the 'Farm and Fun Time Show' … in Bristol, Virginia. Ralph's high tenor harmonies and clawhammer style banjo, combined with Carter's mournful lyrics, made them regional stars. The following year, the Stanley Brothers made their first record on the Rich Artone label. They later signed with Columbia and built their audience through constant touring, until Carter died from cancer in 1966. Ralph continued on, steering the music away from its Bill Monroe–influenced style to a simpler mountain sound."—Morning Edition, NPR
