Tommy Jarrell (1901–85) epitomized the tradition of old-time fiddling. Recorded in fall 1984, just months before his death, this farewell hoedown includes "Say, Darling, Say," "Old Molly Hare," "God Gave Noah the Rainbow Sign," "Little Sadie," "Old Time Backstep Cindy," "Fire on the Mountain," "Granny, Will Your Dog Bite?" "Ida Red," "Little Maggie," "Chapel Hill Serenade," "Old Time Sally Ann," "Poor Ellen Smith," and "Sugar Foot Rag." "He comes by his bona fides authentically. His father, Ben Jarrell, fiddled on some fabulous string band recordings … in the late 1920s. Jarrell's charismatic personality and his willingness to pass on the old tunes were part of his attraction. At current old-time music festivals and jam sessions, his style predominates. During his old age his cabin in Round Peak, North Carolina, hosted many dozens of 'revivalists' for an impromptu jam/tune swap and a plate of beans."—Sing Out!
