Following on their success with Serpico, filmmaker Sidney Lumet and Al Pacino teamed up again in 1975 for this boisterous comedy thriller, based on a true story, that was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won an Oscar for Frank Pierson's streetwise script. Pacino earned a Best Actor nomination for his engaging portrayal of Sonny, who goes from amateur bank robber to rebel celebrity over the course of a hot afternoon. Newcomer Chris Sarandon also copped an Oscar nod in his screen debut.
