In fin-de-siècle Vienna, Chief Inspector Uhl (Giamatti) relates to Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell) the seemingly miraculous magic act of Eisenheim (Norton). When Leopold attends a performance and volunteers his fiancée Sophie (Jessica Biel) for an illusion, the young noblewoman and the magician recognize each other as childhood lovers. Still in love, they arouse the jealousy of the violent Leopold, while Uhl tries to discover the true nature of Eisenheim's magic.
