Bette Davis and Miriam Hopkins, reputedly enemies in real life, play literary rivals in this 1943 adaptation of John Van Druten's popular play. Kit Marlowe (Davis) writes serious novels but lives an unfulfilled personal life. Her oldest friend, Millie (Hopkins), pens trashy potboilers but has the husband Kit loves and a child Kit yearns to call her own. When Kit finally meets an exciting new man (Gig Young), the volatile and insecure Millie throws a jealous tantrum and accuses Kit of cheating with her long-suffering husband (John Loder). Composer Franz Waxman, with one of his best scores, persuasively underscores the film's comedic high jinx and heartfelt dramatics.
