In her last film, Ann Blyth plays quintessential torch singer Helen Morgan in this 1957 biopic inspired by a Playhouse 90 TV special starring Polly Bergen. The songs, including such Morgan hits as "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Bill," and "Why Was I Born?" are sung with considerable verve by pop singer Gogi Grant and lip-synched by Blythe. The movie traces the tragic songbird's life from her acclaimed performance in the original Broadway production of Show Boat to her dramatic battles with depression and alcoholism—most of them precipitated by her ill-fated relationship with Chicago bootlegger Larry Maddox, played by a young Paul Newman in his fifth screen role.
