Description
A charismatic hero of Latin American Constructivism, Joaquín Torres-García (1874–1949) is revered today as one of Latin America's most influential artists. He was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, and was the founder of the Taller Torres-García, an art educational community modeled after the Bauhaus. Celebrated as a painter and theoretician, Torres-García is also famed for breaking new ground in sculpture, and from the late 1920s he developed the "neo-plasticism" of painters Mondrian and Van Doesburg into a three-dimensional realm, making grids and planes in wood which he named "maderas." For this monograph, which is illustrated with 85 reproductions and photographs, scholar and curator Margit Rowell introduces the many facets of this pioneer figure.
