From his first celluloid apperance, dancing the hula with Betty Boop, Popeye's superhuman strength and sense of fair play made him one of America's favorite animated characters during his late-1930s prime. This four-disc collection contains, in chronological order, the first 58 black and white theatrical shorts, fully restored and uncut with all the original Paramount titles, as well as two Technicolor two-reelers, including the Academy Award–nominated Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor. Among the more than five hours of bonus features are two retrospective documentaries, eight "Popumentaries," numerous commentaries, and 16 silent cartoons (ten of Koko the Clown) from the Fleischer Studios' early years.
