With ten tunes (including her biggest hit "Feudin' and Fightin'"), the main attraction here is the hilarious Dorothy Shay, who used the time-honored comedy gambit of incongruity by rendering hillbilly material in the mode of high society ("Joan of Arkansaw," "Mountain Lullaby," "I've Been to Hollywood"). Other mainstream singers essayed a few sides in a similar vein, making up the other 15 selections (e.g., Dinah Shore's "Buttons and Bows" and "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly"; the Modernaires' "Beautiful Blonde From Bashful Bend," the Four Lads' version of Rodgers and Hart's "Way Out West"; "Leave It Up to Uncle Jake" by Zeke Manners & His Swing Billies, and "Them Hill-Billies Are Mountain Williams Now" by the Hoosier Hot Shots). "Some of this material circulates in Europe on CDs mastered from commercial 78s, but it is rare to find these recordings presented in such pristine sound quality as on this legitimate reissue."—All Music Guide "An unusual and imaginative collection.... An entertaining and suprising reminder of novelty music of the time."—No Depression
