Avant-garde mood-jazz musician and bandleader Arthur Lyman drew frequently on Hawaiian culture, as can be heard on this two-for-one disc's tropically inspired "Shells," "Upon a Lonely Beach," "Lahaina Luna," and "Tiny Bubbles" (Don Ho's signature tune). Ocean vistas are evoked with "Ebb Tide," "Harbor Lights," "Red Sails in the Sunset," "Sea Breeze," "Quiet Village," "Busy Port," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," the theme from Mutiny on the Bounty, and even a medley from South Pacific. Lyman adds a bossa nova touch to the theme from The Sandpiper and jazz grooves to "Work Song" and "Ain't No Big Thing," as well as ably covering the then-current pop hits "Born Free," "Lara's Theme," and "La Bamba."
