"Many moods" is the operative term for this pair of popular LPs from the early 1960s by Hawaiian vibraphonist Lyman and his group. Although his trademark was exotica—a blend of cool jazz with primitive percussion instruments, bird calls, and other jungle noises of the tropics—Lyman embraced standards, Broadway, and Hollywood tunes ("America" from West Side Story; "Something Wonderful" and "March of the Siamese Children" from The King and I), and what we now call "world music" ("Sicilian Holiday"; "Danny Boy"). The 24 tracks also include a shimmering and hypnotic "Jungle Flower," a fiery "Babalu," a lilting "Londonderry Air," and a groovy "Sentimental Journey."
